HEALTH / PE

In Waller ISD, health is still a required course for graduation even though the state no longer requires it.  The number one reason for this is that students need the information.   Students will not receive this type of information from any other course offered.  Students learn lifelong lessons!

Students are educated on the harmful effects of tobacco, alcohol and substance use and abuse.  In this course, teens are made aware of the dangers of experimenting with legal and illegal drugs, as well as prescription and over the counter medications.  Personal, social, and legal consequences of use and abuse are reinforced giving students the information they need to make better informed decisions and choices that may affect their future.

Students are required to keep track of their diet for a week and compare it to what they should have as far as nutritional needs and meeting those needs.  Along with this unit of study, other areas, such as lifestyle diseases and disorders that are directly connected to how a person eats, especially genetic factors, are studied and how that can put them or other family members at risk of heart disease, certain cancers and diabetes.

Healthy relationships, responsible decision making, human sexuality, paternity and parenting awareness are also covered in this course.  Students are able to discuss family values and morals, respect in all types of relationships, responsibility and maturity and how it all leads to their becoming independent and productive members of society.

Students are given the opportunity to be certified in adult CPR, how to use an AED and the basics of first aid treatment.  This training is offered free of charge from the American Red Cross, but it is provided by the health teachers, who are all certified instructors for the ARC.
